Sports and the Labour Market: a promising and useful relationship

This report summarizes the results of the Research Gap Analysis (intellectual output 1) of the ERASMUS+ Sport project SbS4MED.

In order to identify possible gaps between existing and desirable skills promoted by sports, the first phase of the project compared the opinions of coaches and sports instructors about the essential skills that they believe are developed and transmitted to athletes, to those identified as valuable for labour market stakeholders and decision-makers (Human Resources experts).

Results from the gap analysis point to the need for developing training modules to cover a variety of areas, which must be the object of other work packages. These should include, among other, a wider reflection on the societal role of sport aimed at coaches, the reinforcement of the practical implication of sports toward the development of employability skills, awareness raising towards the sustainability of skill’s transferability; different practices and concrete tools for developing employability skills through sport and diversity management.

Desporto como veículo para o desenvolvimento de competências para o mercado laboral e para a promoção da empregabilidade e empreendedorismo

[Sport as a vehicle for developing skills for the labor market and promoting employability and entrepreneurship]

This report focuses more specifically on the Portugal case study included in the global report of the intellectual output 1. In the Portuguese context, coaches highlighted communication, teamwork, conflict resolution and decision-making, very similar to the skills mentioned by HR experts although in a different ranking. This report was presented in the European Sports Week 2021, and the Portuguese National Congress of Coaches in 2022 to promote awareness for the national context.

The analysis of the training phase led to the compilation of guidelines about the training of coaches and how to raise awareness in this target public.

HANDBOOK: Sport and the Labour market - a promising and useful relationship

The Handbook aims to organise all the Intellectual Outputs (IOs) of SbS4MED project, showing clearly all the processes and outputs that led to the final experimentation with the Pilot actions implemented in six South European Countries.

Handbook is one of the key tools of the project to allow sport bodies in Europe and in the Mediterranean region to use sport as a vehicle for skills development in the labour market and will have a positive impact especially on a) coaches and sport instructors and b) young and unemployed individuals, as it represents a valuable support for sport education, practice and values to (re) integrate the labour market. The Handbook is at full disposal of EU country members: the document also presents links throughout the manual to training materials and other resources that can be downloaded from SbS4MED website.
